Sabal palmetto “Cabbage Palmetto” USDA Zone 8, Some have survived in 7b The state tree of both South Carolina and Florida, Sabal palmetto is a great cold hardy trunking palm that is unfortunately hard to find in nurseries due to its slow growth rate. Once established, it can take temperatures few palms can, but it needs to be grown out to as large as possible in containers in the coldest climates. Its name comes from early settlers harvesting the growth bud and cooking it like cabbage, but this practice kills the tree, and I've read it's pretty tasteless anyway. Please Read!
