Description: S6276. Jaina Island Rattle Figure. Mayan. 500 – 900 AD. Campecha. Pre-Columbian Pottery Artifact. Mexico. A Mayan Jaina Island artifact from the Classic Period. Jaina is part of the Mexican state of Campecha and located off the Gulf coast. This piece is from the Nicholas T. Molnar collection that was acquired during the period of 1960 to 1978.This is a rattle figure – with some repair – that has lost the rattle balls (typical of these rattles). Much of the paint is still intact. In July 2006, this figure was put up for auction through the Arte Primitivo Howard Rose Gallery (New York) and can be seen on page 12. It has been held by a private party since then. Stand not included. I have been a collector for over 60 years and have spent this time searching for the most unique, wonderous and culturally-significant pieces from far off places like Africa, Middle East, South & Southeast Asia, Central & South America and the Oceania Islands. Most were acquired from the country of origin and/or from avid collectors. All that I know about the item - through provenance or my own research - is shown in the listing. It’s now time for me to thin out my collection. I am sure you will enjoy this item and its history as much as I have.
