Playing with the iconography of public signs and corporate logos, McGinness creates dynamic compositions where the eye is compelled to search for resolution in this semi familiar pictorial landscape. This skate decks, created with Alien Workshop, display five such designs. Alien Workshop decks are constructed to withstand the life of a skateboarder. They are built with high-quality materials, solid constructions, and don’t forget about the unique graphics. This work originated circa 2013 as a result of the collaboration between Alien Workshop and McGinness. Ryan McGinness (American, b. 1972) is an artist known for meditative paintings, installations, and screenprints. His work brings a graphic sensibility into a high art context and explores how contemporary iconography can communicate personal meaning. Born in Virginia Beach, VA, McGinness studied fine arts at the Carnegie Mellon University while working as a curatorial assistant at the Andy Warhol Museum. Influenced by Pop Art, graphic design, and the Rococo style of the 18th century, McGinness creates fantastical networks of imagery borrowed from corporate logos, plant life, and fairy tales.
