Description: GAVRIIL (GABRIEL) MORSKOY (UKRAINE, CHERNIGOV PROVINCE 1862 – ST. PETERSBURG 1914) His real name was Heinrich Janchevetzki. During his childhood, he sang in a choir in Arseni, a city in the Kiev region. Morskoy finished the Chernigov grammar school and then attended the Petersburg Capella. He studied singing at the Petersburg Conservatoire from 1882 to 1889 under Everardi, Gabel, and Palechek. In 1889, Morskoy made his opera debut in Odessa (1889-1892) and then sang in Kiev (1892-1895). From 1895 to 1906, he was at the Mariinsky Theatre, performing roles such as Radames, José, Raoul, and Lenski. He possessed a strong voice with a range up to high C and had a repertoire of around 50 roles, including Sobinin in Ivan Susanin (Glinka), Hermann, Samson, Vodemon, Werther, and Ioann. He also toured in England, and all of his records are considered rare.
