Description: Nice stamp. The Levant is a general name for the coastal lands and islands of the far eastern part of the Mediterranean, from the north-eastern part of the Sinai Peninsula, northwards through modern Israel, Lebanon and Syria, and westwards along the modern Turkish coast. Historically, the term was also used for the geographic identification of Asia in which case it was known as the High Levant. During the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance some European states attempted to exploit the Levant as a trade link to Asia, but failed due to the ongoing conflicts with the Ottoman Empire, and power struggles on continental Europe itself. In modern geographical terms it can be described as a unique ecosystem created by the climatic conditions of the Eastern Mediterranean coast and the Jordan Rift Valley that separates it from the larger continental mass of the West Asian region.
