Description: GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a vintage FULL RED LEATHER hardback edition containing THREE sets of short stories, entitled “Soldiers Three,” “The Story of the Gadsbys,” and “In Black & White,” by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). It was published by Macmillan and Co., Limited, of London, in 1925. The three soldiers of the title are Learoyd, Mulvaney and Ortheris, who appear in the first section and had also appeared previously in the collection Plain Tales from the Hills. The books reveal a side of the British Tommy in Afghanistan rarely seen in the twilight of the British Empire. The soldiers comment on their betters, act the fool, but cut straight to the rawness of war in central Asia as the British began to loosen their Imperial hold. Each of the three sections contain a collection of 8 short stories. The contents include: · Soldiers Threeo The God from the Machineo Private Learoyd’s Storyo The Big Drunk Draf’o The Solid Muldoono With the Main Guardo In the Matter of a Privateo Black Jack · The Story of the Gadsbyso Poor Dear Mammao The World Withouto The Tents of Kedaro With any Amazemento The Garden of Edeno Fatimao The Valley of the Shadowo The Swelling of Jordano L’Envoi · In Black & White (some of these stories are told by Indian narrators)o Dray Wara Yow Deeo The Judgment of Dungarao At Howli Thanao Geminio At Twenty-Twoo In Flood Timeo The Sending of Dana Dao On the City Wall The book measures 7 inches x 4.5 inches and has 353 pages, which are gilt edged to the top rims. The book is in good, used but generally clean and neat condition for its age, with wear/scuffs and is a little grubby to the original red leather limp hardback cover. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There is no dust-jacket. There is a Kipling trademark golden elephant’s head and reverse swastika embellishment on the front board (Kipling, strongly influenced by Indian culture where it is a holy symbol, referred to this as a “magic mark” in Just So Stories [1902]. It was used before the Nazis later made reference to a “swastika” inappropriate). The gold on the front board and decorative spine is still good. A wonderful vintage edition.
