Firemen - Fire Engine - FIRE DEPARTMENT - First responders back in the day! The Queen City of Traverse City, Michigan, the 1858 horse-drawn steam pumper fire engine. The ornate, Victorian-era fire engine is named “The Queen City” and was purchased by the Traverse City Fire Department in 1895. The pumper fire engine was used for 22 years of public service. It was the city's first steam pumper engine and was called out possibly over 4000 times before being replaced by a gasoline powered truck in 1917. What a history!Note: Last image is supplied for reference purposes and so you can clearly see the equipment.The Steam Fired Wagon mounted Fire Engine name was, “Queen City,” which is derived from Traverse City’s then-nickname of “The Queen City of the North.” The strong horses at full gallop pulling the heavy, brightly polished steamer down a cobblestone streets at breakneck speed as kids and other citizens rush to follow in its wake and witness the excitement and heroism of a firefighting operation in Traverse City. The dependable Steamer Queen City, performed magnificently, pouring water onto flaming walls in a continuous stream, extinguishing the fires. It was backed up by the city’s water system. Unbelievably, nineteenth century hydrants and water mains performed without failure. After its retirement, the old fire engine was put on display for the public to admire at Traverse City’s Fire Station Number 1 on Front Street, but now resided on display in Muskegon, Michigan...Location or Photographer known and listed or unknown.
