Inside the magnificent and well-fortified harbour of Sydney is Garden Island, a naval-fitting and repairing station maintained at the cost of the Imperial Government. Alongside the dock wall lies a powerful armoured cruiser, while in the stream is one of the torpedo gun-boats attached to the Australian Squadron, towards the maintenance of which a small contribution is made by the Colony itself.
