Description: This is a display plate made by Royal Doulton, England, as part of the Celebration of Faith series made between 1982 and 1984 only. There were four plates made in the series and this is 'Rosh Hashanah' with the legend 'Happy is the people that knoweth the sound of the shofar'. This is plate number 4910 in the limited edition of 7,500 made in 1982 only, signed by the artist James B Woods. From the enclosed booklet: "Rosh Hashanah, "The Birthday of the World," according to the Jewish religion, is celebrated with a two- day festival in Autumn. The festival is announced by the sounding of the ram's horn (shofar) to mark the beginning of the Jewish New Year. 'Happy is the people that knoweth the sound of the shofar Rosh Hashanah'All the spirit and tradition of this ancient festival is captured by James Woods, whose other works have been shown in the Royal Gallery in London. Here, he has created an intriguing work of art with an almost medieval style. He worked under the supervision of Rabbi Moshe Davis, the Head Rabbi of Great Britain, to produce "Rosh Hashanah" as an original and moving work of art, filled with vivid colors that enchant the eye and capture the imagination. "Rosh Hashanah" is also an exceptional example of the skill of the master craftsmen of Royal Doulton, England. They have followed a tradition of excellence, begun in 1815, to create a work of fine art on fine bone china. The unique pure white English bone china surface is ideal for the reproduction of all the jewel-like colors of the original art. "Rosh Hashanah" is the first edition in a four-plate collection by James Woods entitled, "Celebration of Faith. Each edition will be limited to 7,500 worldwide, sequentially numbered and each plate will bear James Woods' signature. The other plates in the collection will be "Passover," "Yom Kippur" and "Chanukah" "Celebration of Faith" is more than a collection of fine bone china plates, it is a reflection of the ever-present spirit of devotion that is an integral part of Jewish life."
