Description: ROXY ROCA~ BASEMENT TAPES~VOL 1~ RARE~ FUNK~ A KILLER ALL THE CUTS~ Austin TX CD In addition to Cannon, the group's core eight-piece lineup (their ranks occasionally swell to 10) includes guitarist Errol Siegel, bassist Roger Wuthrich, keyboardist Bob Villwock, drummer Paul Kresowik, tenor saxophonist Houston Rawls, trombonist Tom Hays and, on alto sax, Royce Phillips, Jr. A year or so ago the group released a collection called "Basement Tapes, Vol. 1," but Cannon regards their 11-song, already-in-the-can upcoming studio effort as their "real debut," and hopes it will drop by fall. "When I was a little boy, going to my grandmother's in Attalla she always had cornbread on the stove," Cannon, a Gadsden native, says. "It was just kind of a thing. In the song I mention the area she lived in and Etowah County and some of it you can't hear because I'm yelling it but it's in there. Alabama will always be home." This one's for RoxyThe band name Roxy Roca was inspired by actress Roxy Roker, who played Helen Willis, half of the first interracial couple on a primetime TV series, on CBS' long-running sitcom "The Jeffersons." "I remember thinking she was such a classy lady," Cannon says of Roker," and I always thought it was so admirable how The Willises just let all the name calling and ridicule roll off their backs." Of course, Roker, who died in 1995, is also known for being retro-rocker Lenny Kravitz's mother. "He was a big part of the synchronicity that led to naming the band after her because I was really into what he was preaching with (Kravitz's 1989 debut LP) 'Let Love Rule' when I was in junior high or whenever it was when that came out. I found out later that Roxy was his mom. So it was the second time she's really had an effect on my life, and the more that she came up the more I felt like there was a reason behind it all."
