Rossini had been the most popular opera composer in history until he finally retired in 1829. When he moved to Naples and acquired a position as music director of the city's two opera houses, he wrote such famous operas as Il barbiere di Siviglia, Otello, La Cenerentola, La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) and La Donna del Lago (The Lady of the Lake).
