Simultaneously issued in cloth; the wrappered issue appears scarce. An account of early Kansas settlement, written in the form of a series of letters from Ropes to her mother between 1853 and 1856. Provides a "glowing account of conditions for settlement" and "a full description of the immigration of 1854." Ropes (1809-1863) made the journey to Lawrence from her native Maine to join her son, who had emigrated in 1854. After only six months she returned to Maine, where she became an active abolitionist and a noted Civil War nurse – she was appointed Head Matron of the Union Hotel Hospital in Washington, and died there, of typhoid, in 1863.
