Description: Montana artist Ron Bailey (1943-1984), 18" x 24" painting of bull rider, dated 1977. The painting was purchased near Fort Pierre, South Dakota, which has a rodeo arena and history of horse racing. The exact arena pictured is unknown, but the woman selling the painting mentioned that it looked like an arena called the "Three Corners" in South Dakota. Bull riding was an atypical subject for this noted Western artist, at least based on the works appearing in Google searches, which include tipis near streams, log cabins and Western wildlife. Like cowboys, this unframed painting has been treated a bit roughly, but the rubbing over the bull's flank isn't apparent while looking straight at the picture. Straight on, the painting is as gorgeous and dramatic as depicted in the main photo for this listing, with the rich browns of the arena fencing, the rust of the bull and subtle gradations of lilac, pink and blue on the horizon. The whitish marks on the fence posts unfortunately are visible looking straight at it. An art restorer should be able to easily fix. Backing is fiberboard. Would be glad to send more photographs to those with serious interest in this unique piece of Western art. Shipped with UPS Ground and insured.
