Description: Description: A very good copy and an early Smith Elder & Company, London printing of Romola in one volume with half-title, frontis and three full page illustrations. The illustrated half-title shows 1869 while the title page shows 1868. Romola is George Eliot's fourth published novel. Set in Renaissance Italy during the fifteenth century. Condition: 8vo. 835 pages - bound in half-leather with marbled boards, page edges and endpapers. An attractive copy with wear to the edges, corners bumped and rubbed with a few chips to the leather and a bit of loss to the leather on the upper spine tip. Several small scrapes to the rear boards. The armorial bookplate of John Ponsonby, the 5th Earl of Bessborough affixed to the front pastedown. A chip to the corner of the rear free endpaper and creasing to the lower corner of a few pages. Overall, a very nice copy of this early illustrated printing of Romola.
