Description: Justinian I | AE Dodecanummium Reference: SB 247, DOC 274 Date: 527-565 CE Obverse: DN IVSTINIANVS PP AVG; pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Reverse: Large I-cross-B. AΛEZ in exergue Mint: Alexandria Size: 19.1 mm Weight: 5.00 grams Decent detail relative to the type on this oddball denomination from Alexandria. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the Roman Byzantine mint at Alexandria ( and Thessalonica) struck non-standard coin denominations that were not found elsewhere in the empire. These included 33-nummus, 12-nummus, 6-nummus, and 3-nummus coin. This coin features a little "tumor", possibly remnants of a sprue or flash from ancient flan manufacturing. Most ancient coin flans were cast in ceramic mold trees/troughs and then processed into proper blanks before striking. The thoroughness of that flan processing could vary quite a bit. Sprue remnants are actually fairly common on certain series of coins from certain mints during certain periods (bowl-cast Seleucids, later Nabataeans, Judean, and some later Roman bronzes). While sprues rightfully tend to generate suspicion due to the plethora of cast fakes, they generally require further context. This coin was struck and interestingly, the edge of the strike (see reverse) seems to have intersected with the edge of the "tumor" introducing a crack from the compressive force that perfectly lines up with the border on the rest of the reverse. A nice example of the type and a great study piece. suggestive of a possible fake (Cited from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ancients-casting-sprue-question.239110/) Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
