Carbon Partly Printed DS: "Rollo Lloyd" in ink as Artist on verso, 2p, 8½x17. No place, 1935 June 14. Lloyd contracts with Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd. to appear in the role of Wigham in the 1935 film, Barbary Coast, at a salary of $500 per week. Headed: "Minimum Contract for Artists". The term of employment would start on or about the June 29, 1935 and continue until "the completion of the photographing and/or recordation of said role." The producer guarantees employment of not less than one week, and the contract also covers such areas as rest periods, holidays, the use of a double, location expenses, illness and retakes. Also initialed: "R.L." at right margin on front next to a paragraph relating to his contribution to the Motion Picture Relief Fund and signed by a representative of Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd. Ink initials (unknown hand) at lower left margin of verso, which bears two receipt stamps. Lloyd appeared as Wigham in the 1935 film, Barbary Coast, which starred Miriam Hopkins, Edward G. Robinson, Joel McCrea and Walter Brennan. Directed by Howard Hawks, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. In 1935, Lloyd was also seen on the big screen in ten other feature films: The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, The Gilded Lily, The Mystery Man (for which he also wrote the screenplay), Murder on a Honeymoon, Bride of Frankenstein, Mad Love, Hot Tip, His Night Out, Professional Soldier and Magnificent Obsession. Rollo de Leon Lloyd (1883-1938) appeared in over 60 films between 1915 (Midnight at Maxim's) and 1938 (Spawn of the North). He also wrote screenplays and served as a dialogue coach for several films, and Lloyd directed one film, Her Private Affair (1929). Lightly creased with folds, diagonal crease at the "d" of Lloyd. Two pencil "X" marks at lower right margin of front, one at Lloyd's initials. Two file holes at upper margin. Fine condition.
