Description: The History of America. The Tenth Edition, in which is Included the Posthumous Volume. In Four Volumes by William Robertson. Published by A. Strahan, T. Cadell and W. Davies, The Strand, London, 1803. Common points to all four volumes: Very good leather boards with gilt stamped decorative spines and fore-edges. Boards are stained, most extremities and corners worn through. Upper edges at head of board spine are missing. Previous owner's names on all front end papers. Spines are cracked and split to some degree on all volumes. All very age-toned. Issues unique to each volume:(I) Volume I has a 3/8" shallow crater toward the lower left corner of the front panel. This volume lists the contents of all four volumes, which is not included in the others. Following the Preface there are 21 pages of "A Catalogue of Spanish Books and Manuscripts", written in Spanish. A multi-paneled attached, fold-out map of the Gulf of Mexico, the Islands, and Countries Adjacent; there is a 2" closed tear where the map attaches to the text. (II) The front panel of Volume II is only attached by the lower 2". Volume II's map is of South America; there is an irregular 3" closed tear where it attaches to the text and a 2 1/2" closed horizontal tear along one of the folds. Water damage mostly in the margin from pp. 316 - 432 (the last page) and the end pages. (III) The map of Volume III is the "Mexico of New Spain in which the Motions of Cortes may be traced" - it is primarily of lower southwest North America and Central America. This is the sturdiest volume. (IV) The front panel of Vol. IV is separated and the back panel is close to it. Its' map is "of the Countries on the South Sea from Panama to Guyquil" - primarily the upper northwest corner of South America, attached but with a 1 3/4" closed tear. This volume also include the Posthumous information referenced in the title; The History of Virginia, to the year 1688; and of New England, to the year 1652.Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions.
