In 1945, he starred in The Story of G.I. Joe and earned his first and only Oscar nomination. He also portrayed detective Phillip Marlowe in Farewell My Lovely (1975) and The Big Sleep (1978), and starred in the TV miniseries The Winds of War (1983) and its sequel, War and Remembrance (1989).
