Description: This is a wonderful original photogravure of Robert Falcon Scott , leader of the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, and 1910-1912. He was born in June 6 1868 and died March 1912 a year before this commemorative portrait was released. This photographic portrait shows Scott in full dress uniform , was issued March 1913 on the one year anniversary of his death. The portrait was advertised " Messrs. Maull and Fox being the proprietors of the copyright of the only photographs of the late Captain Robert Falcon Scott. RN, CVO, taken in full dress uniform , wearing his decorations , having prepared his likeness a photogravure plate"(Cornhill Magazine 1913.p 14) The portrait depicts Scott in the collar of the Commander of the Royal Victorian Order with his Polar medal awarded in 1905 for the Discovery Expedition. both now in the collection of the British Museum. The publisher enhanced the image with the addition of a facsmile signature. The photogravure is 15.74 by 9.44, 15 by 21 inch frame size in the original oak frame with gilt sight line. This has a Robert Simpson Limited (Toronto )business label on the verso which was in operation from (1896-1952) There have been a number of modern copies of similar images but this was issued in 1913.
