Description: **** VINTAGE WW1 TROOPSHIP POSTCARD **** CUNARD LINER R.M.S. "AQUITANIA" LEAVING SOUTHAMPTON 1919 IMAGE BY BRITISH MARITIME ARTIST JAMES S. MANN (1883 - 1946) RARE CUNARD R.M.S. "AQUITANIA" POSTCARD ON TROOPSHIP DUTY - BREST TO NEW YORK MARCH 1919 EXCEPTIONAL POSTCARD - VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION THE POSTCARD: An early black and white image by Maritime Artist, James Scrimgeour Mann, "CUNARD R.M.S. "AQUITANIA" LEAVING SOUTHAMPTON". It is in very fine to excellent condition, with the usual slightly blunt corners (~100 years old!), and a small stain in the lower right corner, which does not detract from the scarcity of this postally used card, or the rarity of its use. It is UNDATED, and postmarked on arrival in New York by the MILITARY POST OFFICE SOLDIERS MAIL TYPE D301 wavy 7-line machine postmark (8 stars/eagle with arrows). The postcard is addressed to Portland, Oregon. The machine canceller was used at all US East coast arrival/disembarkation ports for homecoming troops. THE HISTORY: The United States entered World War One on 6th April 1917. By the time of the Armistice on 11-11-1918, more than 2 million American military personnel were stationed in France (also Britain and Germany). Ships of many countries provided the amazing service of ferrying these troops home to the USA. They included several large German liners that had sought refuge in American ports at the start of the War, when the USA was still neutral. These were later seized by the US Navy and Military in April 1917. They also included German ships that had been stranded in their home ports throughout the War. In addition, British, French, Italian, and Dutch vessels, among others, as well as American Merchantmen, freighters and US Battleships, were transformed into troop carriers to get the job done The "Ship Beautiful", the Cunard Liner, RMS Aquitania, was one such vessel. The 47,000-tonner was launched in May 1914, and after three trans-Atlantic commercial voyages, served the Admiralty as an Armed Merchant Cruiser, a Troopship to Gallipoli, and a Hospital Ship. In June 1918, after conversion back to a troopship, she took more than 8,000 US and Canadian troops from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Liverpool. In 1919, "Aquitania" performed the first of three round-trip troopship voyages, evacuating US troops from Brest. In her first voyage, she departed the French port on 22nd February, arriving in New York on the 28th. The turnaround on her next voyage saw her back in New York on 30th March. After her final voyage, she was returned to Cunard for refitting, and resumed her commercial Liverpool-to-New York service in June 1919.
