Description: Found at the estate sale of an enthusiastic collector of artwork by acclaimed Alaskan artist Rie Munoz (1921-2015), this cheerful 1994 5”x7” art card is entitled “Gambell Mother”. The image area is 4” x 4.375”. It's matted and framed under glass in a 9.25" x 11.25" contemporary silver gray aluminum channel frame. One photo shows a 12” ruler for scale. As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the history of this lovely art card. It may have purchased in Alaska or at a Rie Munoz exhibition in Washington around 2005. It was stored out of the light for many years. The colors of the print are bright and vibrant but over the years the upper left and lower right corners have become slightly bent (see photos). Rie Munoz (1921-2015) was a beloved Alaskan artist and is famous for her vibrant, unpretentious watercolors of scenes of daily Alaskan life. Born in California, she later lived first in the Netherlands and then in Virginia before moving to Southeast Alaska in 1951. Of this picture she says, “I've visited numerous Eskimo villages and only on St. Lawerence Island in the Bering Sea did I observe a break in what I had thought to be tradition throughout the Eskimo nation.
