Description: Richard Luney's paintings and prints of wildlife (generally African) have been popular since the 1970's. Luney, a Vietnam veteran, was already exhibiting by 1974 at Lord & Taylor Gallery in New York, according to a newspaper account of the time. The artist described his style as "contemporary surrealism". California-born, he would go to Lion Country Safari to study the animals, so as to paint the animals with greater accuracy. He was said to have taken three weeks to meticulously paint one picture, working ten hours a day and seven days a week. Limited edition prints were issued after the originals. In addition to the early showings at Lord & Taylor in New York and Houston, his paintings have been offered by The Jones Gallery of La Jolla, California; Petterson Gallery, Beverly Hills; Elaine Horwitch Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona; and the Galerie Classic Art, Worpswede, Germany. The work is on wood panel, measuring an impressive 34" by 34", and the framed item measures 40" by 40". Condition is excellent. IMPRESSIVE REALISM, a technical wonder, each hair beautifully handled.
