At the systems first stage, the 5 micron sediment filter removes large contaminants including sand, dirt, rust, and silt, along with many other types of sediment. The second stage houses a 5 micron GAC filter. This filter reduces chlorine, BTEX, mineral oil, PACs, and halogenated substances. The third stage is a denser carbon filter, a CTO carbon block filter. The CTO filter removes residual tastes and odors from the water, as well as any remaining chlorine and chloramines. After the three pre-filter stages the water reaches the reverse osmosis membrane, which is the heart of the RO system. The water is pressed through the 0.0001 micron sized holes of the RO membrane, effectively removing arsenic, lead, perchlorate, chromium, copper, TDS, sodium, and a lengthy list of other contaminants. After leaving the storage tank the water passes through the 5th and final stage of filtration, known as the post carbon filter.
