From preface: “In the late 1940's many communities in Ontario built new artificial ice arenas with a combination of provincial government grants and local fund-raising. Most of the personnel brought on to operate these facilities were untrained for their new responsibilities, as no specific training opportunities existed and the literature on the operation of ice arenas was, at best, widely scattered. The Ontario Arenas Association Inc. was organized in 1947 as a forum in which to share information on this growing industry. The Association organized and conducted annual training courses for its members beginning in 1956 and was instrumental in launching a one-year certificate course at Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology in 1973. Both of these training programs continue to operate successfully. With the development of these educational programs, and the advancement of technology in the field, the need for written material also grew. Many of the suppliers of equipment and facilities began to develop their own literature and the O.A.A. Inc. itself, with the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation and the Ontario Ministry of Energy, commissioned two studies on Energy Conservation in 1978. While these efforts added considerably to the growing accumulation of knowledge, the information was still widely scattered. In the fall of 1986, the Association approached the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation with a plan to produce a publication which would include a collection of the best information available under one cover. The Ministry agreed to support this venture and early in 1987, Robert N. Davidson, then Chairman of Academic Studies at Humber College, was selected to compile the material which was originally contained in these pages. Over five thousand copies of the first edition of this publication have been made available to practitioners world-wide. In 1989, a strategic plan was assembled for the Association based upon the needs of the members which identified, among many things, the need to expand the services offered by the Association and in particular, change the name of the organization to the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association Inc. to more accurately respond to the changing aspects of multi-purpose recreation facilities. In 1993, a committee of interested contributors reviewed the first edition of the document and provided updated material to assemble this second edition of the Refrigeration and Icemaking publication.” Hardcover, no dust jacket.
