Description: Sambucus racemosa - Red Elderberry Mature Height: 10 feet Aspect: half shade to full sun Hardiness Zone: USDA 3 Useful as a small tree or large shrub, the Red Elderberry grows in a wide range of soils ranging from dry to very wet. Plants grow quickly and produce flowers on new wood which allows for heavy winter pruning without reducing summer flowering. Many gardeners keep their Elderberry plants short with frequent winter pruning - often 4 to 5 feet tall - but those with larger landscapes can leave them alone to develop into a large shrub. Red Elderberries often grow 10 to 15 feet tall with multiple trunks but under ideal conditions can reach 20 feet. In June and July the plants are covered with white flowers that develop into large clumps of red berries in the fall. The Red Elderberry is native across much of North America in both the west and east and is also native to Eurasia - this is an unusually large range for a single species and is a great indicator for the adaptability if this species. The red berries are edible and popular for making jams and medicinal teas, however they can be bland when eaten raw. When left on the tree through the winter the berries are an excellent food source for birds and other wildlife. Protect young plants from deer as they will often go after new plants in our own garden. Established plants seem to get left alone but the soft, young tissue on juvenile plants is more attractive to deer than the tough mature leaves. Shipping and Planting Information Elderberries produce fleshy taproots that have multiple growing points on the crown just under the soil line. In the spring the taproots begin to produce new fibrous roots just as the new growth is emerging. Plant the crown so that the top of the fleshy roots are just about one inch under the soil line. Unlike many woody plants, individual stems are short-lived and will be replaced by new stems that grow from the base so although the plants will grow as a low shrub for the first 1-2 years, the new shoots produced in later years will be upright in tree form. Most states require that all the soil be washed away from the roots for field grown plants which also gives us the opportunity to trim the roots into good form. The tops are pruned as needed depending on the species and size of the tree. Our handling time is 1-3 business days occasionally we skip the day before a holiday since plants will be sitting at the post office anyway.
