This sale is for a vintage tin capsule FRIENDSHIP 7 toy, made by S.H. Horikawa, Japan, 1960s. This old Space Age friction engine toy does have some minor scratches in the paint and plastic windows, as one would expect from an item this age. There is lettering repair on one side, as shown in the photos. It measures about 9.25” in length, 5.5” wide, and 4.5” tall. It is well detailed and carefully produced. It is a tin version of the capsule John Glenn flew in to be the first American to orbit the Earth on Feb. 20, 1962. He followed Russia’s Yuri Gagarin as the first human to orbit Earth on April 12, 1961. Visible through the window is a tin litho astronaut , Glenn, seated with a detailed control panel behind him. When the friction drive wheels turn, the astronaut spins 360 degrees center from the back of his seat to his position in his seat bottom, as if he were weightless in space. This is an odd concept as we all know how well they were belted securely to their seat. Also, sparks come from the exhaust ports at the same time. This toy comes from an estate of a toy collector who had much experience working with these mechanisms. You can see how he reproduced the lettering on one side of the capsule, as shown in the photos. With low production numbers, this capsule is very hard to find, making it a great acquisition for the smart space-themed collector.
