Description: REAL PHOTO: Catina, Sicily - ITALY - Ratto Di Proserpina: The Fountain of the Rape of Proserpina is a monumental sculptural and hydraulic work of the city of Catania, built in 1904 and placed at the end of Via VI Aprile in a lateral position to the main building of the central station of Catania. The construction of a large fountain to embellish the area where, in 1867, the railway station and the buildings connected to its operation had been built, was entrusted to the sculptor Giulio Moschetti. The latter, who availed himself of the collaboration of his son Mario, proposed the development of a mythological theme, the rape of Proserpina, linked to the ancient history of the Sicilian geographical region. According to the Greek myth, in fact, the goddess Proserpina, daughter of the fertility goddess Demeter, had been kidnapped by Hades, god of the underworld, who had forced her to marry and then reign with him underground. However, in response to the prayers of his desperate mother Demeter, Hades had allowed his wife to leave the underworld for a period of time, corresponding to the spring and summer seasons, after which he returned to her side. As a symbol of prosperity but also of periodic "journeys", Proserpina was the protagonist chosen, together with Hades, as the subject of the fountain project.
