Rare Vintage Anton Sveen Midcentury Handcarved Birchwood Troll Figure, Norway

Description: Anton Sveen (1914-2009) was a Norwegian woodcarver famous for his troll figures carved in hard Norwegian birchwood. His figures have become much sought after high-end collectables in recent years. My mother purchased this one on a trip to Oslo with my father in 1960. Since they did not smoke and were before-their-time anti-smoking crusaders, this troll is unusual since it has no pipe (they refused to buy any with a pipe),and since there is no aperture in the mouth to receive one, it never did. It has wonderful detail, finer than both earlier and later examples as you can see from the pictures. My parents had it sent home by international post, and just to be sure that they got the one they paid for, my mother signed her first name on the bottom of one foot. It’s been a presence in my life since my early teens. He is in wonderful condition, with good color (displayed in a glass case out of the sun for most of his life), and the only special treatment over the years has been a occasional wiping with Scott’s Liquid Gold, which I highly recommend.You don’t want to use Pledge or anything like it so that the surface does not become sealed. This sealing will prevent Scott’s or other oil treatments from bringing out the beautiful, muted colors. My wife and I are selling many items similar to this one. I’m getting old, and, as she puts it, “It’s time for someone else to enjoy these things which we’ve enjoyed so much. If it doesn’t sell quickly, I’m putting it back in its case.
