Noting the tendency of French historians to glorify the monarchs of the distant past, she observes, "it is only by reference to the more confidential records and correspondence of the period" that the modern historian can arrive at "a just estimate of the character and motives of the sovereign." Description: Francis I was King of France from 1515 until his death in 147. He succeeded his first cousin once removed Louis XII, who died without a son. A prodigious patron of the arts, Francis I promoted the emergent French Renaissance by attracting many Italian artists to work for him, including Leonardo da Vinci. Francis' reign saw important cultural changes with the growth of central power in France, the spread of humanism and Protestantism, and the beginning of French exploration of the New World.Don't get a reprint of this fascinating and culturally important work when you can own an original piece of literary history!
