Description: Here is a very nice and rather unusual bit of quack medicine in the form of a token, medal or pendant, composed of various metal types, in quite splendid condition overall, measuring app. 1 & 1/4" across, with a plain edge. This interesting medical-related piece shows just minimal wear. Slight staining on one side. Other is clean and nice. A similar token is listed in Rulau's reference work, where it is identified as MV 292. My piece does not have a patent date, however, with the legends on both sides basically the same. The author mentions that this and similar pieces "seem to be illegitimate copies of Boyd's Miniature Galvanic Battery", which was in fact patented in 1878. He questions the date of the Sagendorph's piece in his catalog, saying a similar patent year as the Boyd piece is "a patent office impossibility". Interesting that this one does not have that date. The battery is composed of twelve small, varicolored metal rounds surrounding a scalloped central piece with a center plug, the brass, copper and German Silver units enclosed in an outer band. The scalloped sections on both sides read "Sagendorph's Battery" around the middle, silver-colored piece. Much less common than the Boyd’s Battery. The last one I could find sold on eBay in August.
