RARE RETRO ON TREND MODERNIST ROYAL WINTON TWO HANDLED JARDINIERE 36cm long

Description: RARE RETRO MODERNIST ROYAL WINTON JARDINIERE This is a really striking and interesting piece of pottery from the mid 20th centuryperfect for a Retro 1950sto 1970s interior. It is either a Jardinière or table centre or piece to display on a sleek retro sideboard. This really bold abstract design appears to be at least partially hand applied in jet black and yellow ochre enamels that are both below and above the surface of the pottery (see photo). It is an elliptical shape with a wide gold gilded handle at each end. There is impressed ribbing to both the top rim band and at the base and the off white pottery has a satin finish. Stamped on the base ROYAL WINTON GRIMWADES which dates to 1951+ also impressed on the base DORIC MADE IN ENGLAND Not sure what connection these two potteries had as Doric was a separate company as far as I know that was bought out by someone else in 1948 and so perhaps this was a blank that Royal Winton purchased from the new owners of Doric and decorated themselves with this striking abstract modern design and then stamped it with their back stamp. CONDITION In good vintage condition overall with no chips or cracks but does have very fine overall crazing. There is a little rubbing and marks to the gold gilding on handles. There are also marks inside the base and inside rim near the top in the form of fine greyish lines (see photos). There is also a light brown area Of discolouration on one side inside the rim about 2cm down. You can see it in at least one photo – not dark or obvious but it is there and shows it has been used. It doesn’t ‘ping’ when tapped as it is pottery, not porcelain and has glaze crazing so this is not surprising either but sounds hollow when you tap it rather than dull or damaged.
