It was Jerry Masucci, President of Fania Records. "Joe", he said, "I understand that you are writing the liner notes for Ray's new album. I would like you to come over to my office this afternoon and listen to the album so that I can have the notes on Wednesday" I cancelled my psychiatrist's appointment and rushed over to Fania. I listened to Ray's new album, "HARD HANDS" and I flipped. It's truly 'out of sight'. But it's not my intention to write about the music. I'm sure you will agree it speaks for itself. As a disc jockey I've been asked by many people how Ray Barretto can follow up an album as great as "ACID", his first for Fania. Well I think Ray has accomplished the impossible... "HARD HANDS" tops "ACID"!!! Ray Barretto, tall and lean, is full of "soul" from head to toe. His vivid imagination and great creative ability mark him a true leader in the world of Latin American music today. Symphony Sid and I were the first to recognize and showcase Ray Barretto's new sound. It is reassuring to know that others who program music in the broadcasting industry are also recognizing Ray Barretto's great effort to bring a new dimension to Latin American music.
