Description: BEAVER FIELDBeaver Field was the home of Penn State football from 1909 to 1959, and it served as an iconic venue in the early history of the Nittany Lions football program. Originally located on the west end of campus, the stadium was relatively modest compared to today's standards, with wooden bleachers and a seating capacity that grew over time from about 500 to 30,000. It was named after James A. Beaver, a former Pennsylvania governor and a key figure in establishing the university's athletics program.During its 50 years of operation, Beaver Field hosted many notable players who would become synonymous with Penn State football. Perhaps the most famous was Lenny Moore, a dynamic running back who played in the mid-1950s. Moore would go on to have a Hall of Fame career in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts. Another standout player was Richie Lucas, a quarterback who became a Penn State legend in the late 1950s, earning All-American honors and finishing second in the 1959 Heisman Trophy voting.In addition to individual talent, Beaver Field was the site of Penn State's rise to national prominence in college football. The program saw periods of success under coaches like Hugo Bezdek and Rip Engle, setting the foundation for the powerhouse program that would emerge in the later decades. Beaver Field's history came to an end in 1959 when Penn State moved to the larger, modern Beaver Stadium, which was built on a different part of campus and eventually expanded into one of the largest venues in college football.
