Description: "Animal of the Bear Kind." Catton Did not know what type of bear it was. From the “Animals Drawn from Nature and Engraved in Aqua-Tinta” by Charles Catton Jr. published in 1788. Includes copy of title page (with date), index and animal description for authentication. This print is not signed. It is a very early example of a work including hand-coloured aquatints. The thirty-six animals described, all mammals except for the crocodile, were from both the New World and the Old World. At the time Catton had not travelled abroad so he drew native British animals as well as exotics kept in captivity in Britain inventing the setting for each animal. (Wikipeda reference) Catton was a predecessor to John James Audubon. Taken from a set of 36 plates which were published in 1788 by I&J Taylor with the title "Animals Drawn from Nature & Engraved in Aqua-Tinta." In fact, Catton drew the animals whilst they were in captivity in England,.
