Description: Rare masonic sheet music from Selwyn Lodge, No. 1901. This London, UK, lodge was warranted in 1901 and was erased in 2008 due to declining membership. Known meeting locations include East Dulwich Hotel, Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, London and Montpelier Hotel, Choumert Road, Peckham, London. This "Petition for Absent Brethren" includes the following instructions: "the W. M. rises at 9 o'clock to give the toast to absent Brethern, and calls on Bro. Organist who proceeds as follows:" After a short organ prelude, the Brethern sing Stephanos, a tune composed by Sir Henry Williams Baker in 1868. Numerous published hymns use the Stephanos music with differing lyrics--typically religious. In this case, the Masonic lyrics for this tune are Tyler's Ode. This sheet music was published by George Kenning & Son, a prominent London supplier of Masonic regalia and printed materials. This music is printed on heavy card stock and measures 8 5/16" by 6 1/2". There is some staining on the front and back. The card has been folded in half, leaving a barely visible crease on the front and broken surface on the back. Please see photos to evaluate condition.
