Some of these pictures show the jar with no contents, we emptied it to highlight the purple purple color without any contents to mask the true purple color and then we put the contents back in as it still gives off such a pleasant aroma! This jar has many nice things going for it! It is embossed in the glass on three of the four sides, comes with ORIGINAL fancy embossed BRASS CAP, and also has the original paper label that came on the bottle. It is a TRUE ANTIQUE JAR, dating back WELL OVER 100 years old. This jar is a 'TOUT MON JARDIN Pot Pourri Sachet' jar and it is still packed with its fragrant dried herbs and leaves that made up a Pot Pourri; a sachet jar; like an air freshener of today. Back then the cap would of been removed and the attractively ornate jar would of sat out in different locations in a home, scenting the room, much like an air freshener of today. Richard Hudnut was a late 19-teenth century New York City perfumer. His company put out a wide variety of perfumes and cosmetic products in the 1800's-1900's, and as a result, today we are left with a vast array of beautiful antique bottles, tins, compacts, and other vanity items. This is one of them and ... look at the color! You hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... here is the way it works. This beautiful purple amethyst color is the result of this jar being blown with manganese-glass, and then over time, being exposed to ultra violet rays which oxidize the manganese and turn it purple. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to ultraviolet rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This can be achieved by long term exposure to sunlight and other processes that expose the item to intense UV rays. Though some may suggest that the lavender color has been artificially produced or altered if it was purpled by any other source than natural sunlight, in reality, the only thing that may be altered is the time it took to turn purple. It really doesn't matter whether a jar like this has turned purple from the sun or UV rays in a controlled environment, they all turn the same purple color as it is all the same chemical reaction taking place. What matters most is the AGE of the jar, as with few exceptions, ONLY clear glass jars from before 1914 have manganese in and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. This is the key, this is a super early antique jar. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique. Most all of these jars you sees for sale are the smaller 5 inch tall or shorter size, this is one of the rare LARGER examples to be found, which means there is that much more to enjoy, check it out!
