Karl Höfner KH312 Violin - Custom Shop, Bubenreuth, Germany, circa mid-1950sAccessories: sold separately - please read Accessory Option below. The Karl Höfner KH312 violin is the most senior model in Höfner's prestigious "Concert" series and is among the finest of Karl Höfner's professional instruments. According to a 1950s Karl Höfner's dealer catalogue, their Concert series violins "are made throughout of beautifully flamed and thoroughly seasoned wood, are carefully graduated and finished and are mounted with good quality ebony trimmings. The tone is rich and full." These violins were made at Höfner's Custom Shop (Meisterwerkstadt) in Bubenreuth and were individual work of the firm's top luthiers. Following is the description of the KH312 model in Karl Höfner's catalogue of that time:"Stradivarius, extra selected one piece back, selected old top, yellow reddish varnish, slightly shaded, beautiful imitation old, highly polished, fine concert instrument." This violin lives up to the description. The woods show beautiful grain, and the craftsmanship is superb. The instrument is responsive and will impresses with its expressive voice, excellent balance across the entire range, rich resonance, and complexity of the tone.Despite its respectable age, the violin is in very good condition. There are no cracks or repairs. However, there are some traces of prior use - please review the images carefully. The violin features top grade ebony fittings by Teller, an Aubert a Mirecourt bridge, and a Götz chinrest. The GDA strings are brand new Thomastik Dominant, and the E string is the gold-plated Pirastro Obligato.Accessory Option The price shown is for the violin only. (For reference, I have posted my KH200 at $1,650 violin only, and I see KH200 violins offered by some highly respected string shops in the $2,500-$3,000 range.) Based on Karl Höfner's 1995 catalogue for Japan (the latest pricelist for the KH violins that I was able to locate), the KH312 was priced at JPY355,000, equivalent to approximately $3,300 at that time. Given that prices for higher quality musical instruments have significantly increased since 1995, due to labor and premium tone wood inflation, this data point gives a rough idea of what the current list price for this model might be, were it still in production.
