Khmer Angkor Wat 'Bayon'Style. 17/18th Century, Cambodia. Description:x An exquisite Khmer bronze sculpture of a Female Deity, that of 'Parvati', stylistically and iconographically executed in 'Bayon' style, gracefully portrayed standing in a convincing frontal posture on a display base, with both arms and legs broken. In this context, she can be understood as the Goddess of Power and Devotion, consort of Lord Shiva, and active female manifestation, or Shakti, who rid the world of evil forces. XXX She is beautifully modeled with a voluptuous figure, gracefully poised, depicted with a well-defined naked upper body and broad hips, covered by a long stylized Sarong wrap worn high on her hips, secured by a decorative belt, and complimented by an elegant fashioned central panel decorated with an incised pattern. Her youthful face with indigenous characteristics has arched eyebrows meeting at the center, accenting her almond-shaped eyes, a well-shaped nose, a wide mouth with an insipid smile, and elongad earlobes. XXX Her hair is piled tightly into a inter-connected Diadem crown embellish with the miniature Buddha 'Amitabha' figure seated in meditation, with the hands folded in Dhyanamudra, centered on her headdress in a sanctuary like setting. XXX The figure has a smooth naturally aged green hardstone patina of molted variations, shows even wear on the entire piece. This skillfully executed image is a superb example of the Khmer culture and the artistic style of Kulen’s transitional period. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of the divine iconic goddess in human form, with lively imagination and conviction. Remarks:xxxxxxxxx 25 year Private USA Collection.
