Description: Edith Loring Peirce (married name Getchell) (1855-1940) was an American artist/etcher who was born in Pennsylvania. She studied with Peter Moran at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and with Thomas Eakins at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. Peirce is one of the rare women etchers of the 19th-early 20th centuries. During the 1890s, Peirce was active in San Francisco (I have been unable to discover how she made her way to California, since she lived on the East Coast after marrying in 1885 and by the time of her death in 1940 Peirce was back in Worcester, Mass.). In any case, she began to create etchings after sketches and paintings by the Scottish/West Coast artist, William Keith (1838-1911). For example, there is an etching by her from this period entitled "Carmel Mission Before Restoration" in the collection of the National Gallery of Art (No. 2008.115.3871). The rare etching offered here, on silk, was apparently created as a Christmas greeting, as the words "Christmas Cheer" are printed in bottom center. However, the etching is of a distant Mount Hood after a painting of the same peak by William Keith. It is signed in the image, "E.L. Peirce" in the lower left and "W. B. Keith" in the lower right. On the left side of the image of Mount Hood, Peirce has etched a large redwood tree above which are the words "Mount Hood" and below "Copyright". I don't see a date but I did find a publication from 1886 which advertised another Peirce etching after a Keith work which stated that the Mount Hood etching had been published previously. This is an opportunity to obtain a somewhat damaged work (which could easily be removed from the mount and flattened or stretched) by an American woman etcher. It is not pencil-signed but rather signed in the image. This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". For example, offered maps are of the period.
