Description: This listing is for a Rare BEATRICE TURNER Original Signed Oil Painting Antique Self Portrait titled “Evening Dress”. Beatrice Turner was a talented artist, and a fascinating person. Her story has in the past been skewed, and most of her works lost. After her death, almost her entire collection was burned at the newport dump- including historical scenes of the town meant for the historic society. This makes her work exceedingly rare, most of which is owned by the B&B that currently occupies her former Newport RI home. This fabulous piece of Art features Beatrice herself in profile, wearing her finest evening clothes & jewelry and with her hair done up. Her impressionist style is rather pleasing to the eye, the pink toned background somehow draws the eye to her figure. With the right lighting, this painting really pops. It is an excellent piece for your collection, one your friends definitely wont have! It is a great collectors item, for display gifting galleries, and more. Beatrice never married, and when her father died she painted their Newport house “Cliffside” completely black. Adding to the oddity of her reputation, she wore Victorian clothes until her death in 1948 as if keeping the gilded age alive through her fashion. It would seem her outlet for an otherwise uneventful life was painting. She became an amazingly prolific artist, filling Cliffside with thousands of her works. For a long time it was believed she only ever painted herself, and occasionally her mother-leaving almost a photographic record in paintings of herself through various stages of her life. Despite her undeniable artistic talent, she was never taken seriously as an artist. As far as I know, her only remaining paintings are at the inn occupying her former home. Luckily a book has been published about her which provides a more accurate account, taken from her diaries. It has at some point been mounted on a piece of board for preservation, rather than being rolled thankfully. It has one tear in the bottom right quadrant, which could be relatively easily restored before remounting and framing. It is completely unframed, ready for minor restoration & then remounting then framing to the buyers taste. It has some slight aging, as happens to an original painting over time. No major paint loss or fading of colors. Please see photos for exact details, comes as found, no restorations or cleaning attempted. Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers always considered. Comes as shown as is, no COA included, please see photos for details and measurements. Comes insured in shipment, packed with extreme care.
