Rare Art Nouveau Nipon Era I E & C Co Japanese Moriage Chocolate Pot C1920

Description: In excellent condition this antique Japanese chocolate pot is a rare find, as the style is not the usual Art Nouveau scenes of large flowers, but seems to be inspired by the newly emerging Art Deco influence. This can be seen in the repeating angular patterns circumferancing the pot at the top and bottom. An excellent example piece of the transition from one style to another.  This piece can be styled with any modern decor for a soft classic touch. Accented with gold paint and raised gilding, it shines in the light coming from your windows or feature lighting. A full description of the techniques used in this piece, as well and the history of Japanese pottery and this makers mark, can be found here: http://www.noritakecollectorsguild.info/researchers/johnhenley/index.html http://www.noritakecollectorsguild.info/researchers/johnhenley/IEC.pdf You can notice the makers mark is very similar to Nippon/Noritake and this suggests some type of contingency: "Nippon/Noritake. The "T N" could be "Tame & Nakamura" of "Moriyama style". "Flower" mark in shape of five "M" for Moriyama. Early 20th century." https://www.gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturyjapan.shtml You can further read up on the history of Japanese ceramic making here: https://www.daiichiarts.com/blog/81-a-modern-master-revealed-yasuhara-yoshiaki-and-the-ceramics-revolution-of-the/ "The modern ceramics culture that emerged in Tokyo during the Taisho era (1912–26) was fostered by highly trained ceramicists, well versed in the history of ceramics, particularly East Asian ceramics, and influenced by the British Arts and Crafts movement and modernist European sculpture and painting. One of the defining features of modern Japanese ceramics was the emphasis placed on individual expressions of artistic creativity, achieved through mastery of technique and form. The hand of the artist was essential to this process (jitsuzai shugisha), as opposed to ceramics made to order or created by assistants. Modern pioneers such as Tomimoto Kenkichi, Kusube Yaichi (1897–1984), and Yagi Issō (1894–1973) signed, named and exhibited one-of-a-kind vessels and lobbied to have art ceramics (bijutsu toki) classified as fine art." https://chano-yu.com/types-of-japanese-pottery-and-porcelain/#:~:text=Thus%20Arita%20porcelain%20is%20also,and%20strongly%20influenced%20European%20ceramics. “Old Imari is quite probably the most famous Japanese ceramic product in the world. China, the dominant exporter of porcelain, fell into internal disturbances in 1644 and it became hard to obtain Chinese products. The west requested Japan to step up production of porcelain instead of China because Europe did not have the techniques to make porcelain at that time. Thus substantial amounts of Japanese porcelain ware were made in the town of Arita and exported to Europe from the port of Imari by the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) from the late 17th to early 18th century in order to meet demand in the west. Thus Arita porcelain is also often known as Imari. Arita ware was the first porcelain product in Japanese history, and strongly influenced European ceramics.” https://japanesegallery.com/about-antiques-ceramics#:~:text=Arita%20and%20Imari%20porcelain%20gained,for%20export%2C%20was%20shipped%20internationally. “Korean craftsmen, who were brought over to Japan after the invasion of Korea, and their Japanese counterparts first found kaolin clay in Arita in 1616. Soon after, they built an advanced type of continuous step-chamber kiln of Korean design and produced the first pieces of porcelain. This happened at just the right time to fill a gap in the international market that developed due to political unrest in China, when the new Qing dynasty government stopped trade between 1656 and 1684. Japanese Arita kilns stepped up to fill the gap in the market and the porcelain was widely exported to Europe through the Dutch East India Company. As a result, a unique style emerged, combining 3 elements: 1. a Korean style overglazing technique introduced by the new kilns, 2. refined Chinese designs and 3. Imari porcelain, which was specifically designed for trade and the European taste.”
