This engraving was published by Claes Jansz. Visscher. The Visschers were a reknown family of succeeding makers of maps and atlasses and prints in Amsterdam. The founder of this dynasty was Claes Jansz. Visscher (Latin: N.J. Piscator; 1587-1652) who was a skillful artist, engraver and etcher, besides running his very succesful publishing activities. Subject: Antique print, titled: 'Pars septentrionalis Brabantiae, et circumiacentium provinciarum.' - Rare map of the area between Mechelen and the Schelde in the West and the Maas and the river Aade in the East, reaching to Dordrecht in the North and to Eindhoven in the South. At bottom left Zierikzee and to the right the Selsaet moors. In its days the map was of exceptional importance on the account of the many changes of the landscape caused by inundation's and military operations. This map depicts fortifications during the Spanish-Dutch 80 year war. With two inset plans of Bergen op Zoom and Breda. In lower right bottom “Gedruckt by Claes Janß Visscher. Anno 1625”. With the additional remark near the right hand margin “S Hertogen-bosch in dese forme belegert door Syn Exell. Fred. Hendrick van Naßou begonnen den 1.en May anno 1629”.Condition: Very good, given age. Middle fold as issued. Light foxing. Remains of paper and tape from previous attachment. Slight paper separation in lower middle fold margin, backed, not effecting image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
