Description: 'Ardenner.' This plate depicts the Ardennais or Ardennes, one of the oldest breeds of draft horse, and originates from the Ardennes area in Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. Crayon type lithograph, with lithographic colour toning and additional accent hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper. Sheet size: 34 x 26 cm. (13,4 x 10,2 inch). Image size: 22,5 x 18,5 cm. (8,9 x 7,3 inch). This delicate print originates from a very scarse series of horse prints: 'Abbildungen vorzuglicher Pferde-Rassen', by Emil Volkers, made c. 1880. Some of these prints were also used for an even scarser: 'Sport, Illustrierte Blatter fur Reiter und Pferdefreunde', published by Schickhardt & Ebner, Stuttgart. Made by 'Emil Volkers' after own design. Emil Volkers (1831-1905): German painter, lithographer. He is known for his landscape and animal scenes. For a time he worked for the Prince of Romania in Bucharest, but most of his career was spend in Dusseldorf. Condition: Very good, given age. Paper edges ocassionally chipped.
