Description: Rare Antique GEORGE JONES & SONS CRESCENT CHINA "Gotha" Pattern #A4548. Pattern Description: Pink Roses, Green Swags & Scrolls, Salmon/Tan Edge, Smooth Rim, Gold Metallic Trim. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find many other examples of this pattern. George Jones (& Sons Ltd.) were manufacturers of earthenware, majolica and china ware at Stoke, Stoke-on-Trent from 1861 until 1957. By 1873 the two eldest sons, Frank Ralph Jones and George Henry Jones became partners in the business which was renamed George Jones & Sons. 'Crescent' was registered as a trademark for the new company. At this time the business had 590 employees. Around 1907 the works were renamed 'Crescent Potteries'. Use of the Crescent China trade name ceased around 1951. In 1957 George Jones & Sons Ltd ceased trading and in 1959 the Crescent works were demolished. Note that there was an American company called Crescent as well. Marks and initials used on ware for identification: Early George Jones majolica was marked with the impressed superimposed letters GJ contained within a circle. In 1873, a crescent inscribed with "& SONS" was added beneath the initials. Many pieces also have a small unglazed area or "thumbprint" which has a pattern number written in black ink. Early wares also often bear a British registry mark. The mark on this pattern has the 'GJ' "& SONS' inside the crescent with 'ENGLAND' above and 'CRESCENT, CHINA' below. See photos. Note the use of "ENGLAND" which generally indicated a date after 1891 - although some manufacturers used ENGLAND before this date. It appears that this 'England-Crescent China-George Jones & Sons' Maker's Mark dates to circa 1891 to 1921, but I cannot verify with any certainty. Also, most items are marked with the Pattern # of "A4548" with another number below, possibly the kiln number, a date, or an artist reference. Please reference the photos. Condition: This century old china is in great antique condition. All pieces are in Very Good condition with light shelf wear. Only light wear to gold trim. Some flea bite chips may exist.
