This was the major, very large hotel in Paris, France. ON THE BACK IS HAND WRITTEN IN INK, "HOTEL de VILLE".Not only a very early Civil War period CdV photo, but a rare early exterior pose and an iconic Paris building!!Carte de Visite photos were popular during the Civil War and early Victorian period, of military men, civilians, and very occasionally exterior poses. Carte de Visites were the most popular format during those early years, and including military, political, tourist, and other non family views in your CdV album was very common. This was the best and really only way to collect such pictures, without having the various other methods we have today to see them. Exterior photos were difficult to photograph with early cameras, etc., and they were an especially unusual, nice, and desirable addition to an album and not often seen.THIS ONE IS A PARTICULARLY NICE EXTERIO EXAMPLE OF A FAMOUS BUILDING.Very clear, in excellent condition.
