Waite Location: Emporia, Kansas (KS) Date: May, 1889 "DORMAN S. KELLY DEAD Dorman S. Kelly, of 1521 Highland, who was for twelve years at the head of the natural history department in the Kansas State Normal, died suddenly today at 11 o'clock of heart failure. At 10 o'clock this morning be complained oi pains near his heart and physicians were called. The doctors had been at the Kelly home only a short time when Mr. Kelly died. D. S. Kelly was a native of Indiana. He began his teaching career in a district school in Owen county, Ind., and between times when he was not teaching he attended school. From the district school he went to Patricksburg, Ind., his native town, where he was principal of the schools. Leaving Patricksburg, he get a better position as principal of one of the ward schools in Evansville, Ind. At the close of his first year in Evansville, he was elected assistant superintendent of the Evansville schools. He held this job for five years, going to Jeffersonville, Ind., where he was made superintendent of the schools. In 1885, when he came to Emporia, to become the head of the department of natural history. In 1897 he went to Indiana to take a more lucrative position. In 1899 he returned to Emporia, and engaged in the life insurance business. Mr. Kelly attended Harvard in 1886, and he also attended the State Normal School in Indiana. He received his early educational training in a private seminary. After a three years' residence in Emporia, Mr. Kelly married Mrs. Louise Fox (sic), who was at that time the Normal librarian. Mr. Kelly was at elder in the Christian church, and an untiring worker for its advancement. For several years he was president of the State Society of Christian Endeavor. He often preached, and had filled the appointment at the Madison Christian church regularly for the past few months. With Elder S. W. Brown, of El Dorado, he was conducting a revival meeting at that place, which began a week ago Sunday. He is well known in the Christian church all over the state. He was a strong, consistent Christian, a gentle, kindly man, whose good works will live after him. He was devoted to his family, which consists of his wife and his daughter, Beryl, and to them the town extends its sincerest sympathy. Mr. Kelly's parents came from Indiana to live with their son and died at his home in Topeka. The funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow."
