At the time of her construction in 1960, the 316 m (1,037 ft) vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record that remained unchallenged until the construction of the 345 m (1,132 ft) RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004. ---Even as she was launched, jet travel was becoming increasingly available and affordable to the public. Costing outrageous amounts in fuel, the ship was subsidized by the French government almost right from the start. Designed as a Paquebot Transatlantique or Transatlantic Ocean Liner, with indoor swimming pools and other amenities to suit cold Atlantic Ocean crossings, the France was not really suited to hot weather travel. Nonetheless, almost immediately, CGT began offering Winter cruises from New York to various Caribbean ports, which were hugely successful.----In 1979, the SS France was bought by the Norwegian Line, renamed the SS Norway and underwent significant modifications to refit her for cruising duties. With changing travel interests due to the economy and cost of oil, the ship was scrapped in early 2000s. Auntie B’s first cruise was on the SS France in 1966, so naturally she wanted to cruise on the new Norway. While it was elegant and lovely, she said she missed the Sixties Art Deco redux of the SS France. Even the graceful funnels reminded her of her love for The France. After Aunt’s first cruise, she was hooked and took one or two cruises every year on every cruise line: Cunard, Italian, Homeric, Norwegian… But for her, there was nothing that could compare to the SS France.
