Description: 1998 Zouk Club - Mambo Jambo: Wednesday Night Live - The Greatest Party On Earth Mixed By Resident DJ Adam Low (Avex Trax / AVTCD-95206) Seller's Description: What we have here is a rare 1998 Mambo Jambo CD from Zouk, Singapore. A selection of 22 tracks (from the 70s to the 90s) mixed by then resident DJ Adam Low. A hard to find CD that is out of print. For collectors! History of Mambo Jambo (from the CD) - The name Mambo Jambo is a twist on the phrase "mumbo jumbo" which can mean either : 1. Foolish religious reverence, ritual or incantation 2. Meaningless or unnecessarily complicated language The word 'Mambo' by itself means 'a modern Latin American dance' and 'Jambo' means 'an East African salutation' or simply, "hello", in Swahili Zouk began in March 1991 as a House music club, at a time when House music had not yet surfaced in Asia. Zouk took on the mission to pioneer quality House music in Singapore, it also tried to make the club and the concept accessible to a larger audience. By mid 1991, Zouk spun off its Wednesday night by playing 70s and 80s disco music; music which most teens can easily relate to but with a bit of House music thrown in for good measure. It served as a light hearted counterpoint to the staple House music. The name Mambo Jambo being a pun to mumbo jumbo, reflects the whole spirit of this Wednesday venture. It began its life in 1991 as a bit of a laugh at the whole nature of music itself. It also reminded our resident DJs not to take House music too seriously and to keep an open mind. As the saying goes, 'what comes around goes around'; music and history tend to repeat themselves. Many samples and loops that one finds in House music came from disco. Hopefully, one day, more people will also understand the connections between different genres of music. In 1991, Zouk was not an alien creation from space but just a natural progression of dance music. Oddly enough, Mambo Jambo which started as a bit of a joke and tease grew to become the most popular night in Singapore clubbing. Today, there are more people queuing up for this Wednesday night than most weekend nights. It's success has spawned many copies of this the 'retro' formula by other clubs. Few people realize that the Zouk / Mambo Jambo formula is unique in many ways: 1) It only happens in Zouk on a Wednesday night. 2) The main driving force behind it is DJ Adam Low, a veteran of 70s and 80s music as well as a mover and shaker of House music. Adam was the first Singapore DJ to drop House music tracks amidst his disco set, while at Rumours Disco in the late 80s. Adam is a master in mixing a tight set, keeping the dancefloor on its toes by dropping in surprises when they are least expected. 3) Zouk has one of the biggest collection of vinyls and rare mixes of 70s and 80s music besides its vast collection of House grooves. Thus mixture is never the same every Wednesday. 4) Mambo Jambo is not just retro, and more importantly, retro is not Mambo Jambo. It has its own very unique blend of musical style and concoctions. From 1991 until the present day, Mambo Jambo has become a phenomenon with a faithful band of followers not unlike that of a cult following. Its popularity passes on from one teenage generation to another as they come of age. From its offbeat beginnings, Zouk now treats Mambo Jambo with a deep reverence. Not because of the long queues outside the club every Wednesday, but for the purpose it serves to dance music. Mambo Jambo is the introductory level for any maturing teenagers who may take their next step to become fervent clubbers with a passion for deeper appreciation of House music and its derivatives.
