Description: [Published January 23, 1929] "AFGHANISTAN REPUDIATES WESTERN IDEALS"--A tribal Afghan jumps up and down on an English bowler hat during the InterWar era.[Published March 6, 1929] "THE LAST BUS HOME." Afghanistan realises that there may be something after all in western civilization - (see cartoon of January 23). [With Mr Punch's sincere compliments to the RAF on the completion of their brilliant work between Kabul and Peshawar.] --------------------------------------InterWar cartoon showing a tribal Afghan jumping on a western hat while looking up at an RAF plane which has spelt the word Goodbye with its trail. Keywords: Habibulla Ghazi, Amanulla Kahn, coup dโรฉtat, civil war, tribesmen, Central Asia, Habibullah Kalkani, RAF, Royal Air Force, evacuations, British legation, Afghanistan, tribesmen.--"The cartoon referred to a decree issued by King Amanullah Khan, who ruled Afghanistan from 1919 to 1929, that required his subjects to adopt Western dress, and depicted a fearsome Afghan warrior in traditional dress jumping on a bowler hat in apparent disgust at the notion." [from the internet]--The second cartoon was published 6 weeks after the first. It may be that there were objections to the first cartoon. Punch was an establishment publication and therefore pro-imperialist. The first cartoon does not satirize the Afghan as he shows a child-like temper tantrum but also anger and disgust toward "Western Ideals" i.e., the great powers of colonialism, especially Great Britain. The next published cartoon, which reference the first in parentheses, reveals the Afghan he may be wrong, therefore showing the giving a satisfying imperialist response to the first cartoon. By 1901 he had joined the staff of Punch as the junior political cartoonist.WHAT IS PUNCH? Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. Punch was the world's most celebrated magazine of wit and satire. From its early years as a campaigner for social justice to its transformation into national icon, Punch played a central role in the formation of British identity -- and how the rest of the world saw the British nation. In its formative years Punch combined humors, illustration and political debate with a fresh and radical audacity. During its heyday in the late 1800s, it reflected the conservative views of the growing middle-classes and copies of it could be found in the libraries of diplomats, cabinet ministers and even royalty. In the Western world, Punch played a significant role in the development of satire. In the world of illustration, it practically revolutionized it. Over the decades as it charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable source of cartoon art, satire, but as primary source material for historians.
