He has been looking at the "crib" or answer sheet, as the school teacher suspects. --In most Western countries corporal punishment is now illegal, and many consider it to be immoral. This was not so in the past. Corporal punishment was only finally outlawed in England in 1987, and the Victorian reader of Punch would find it amusing that the boy was "getting what was coming to him."
